Hula Hoop Fun

Hula Hoop Fun

Hula hoops are ancient toys used by young people since at least 500 BC!

In the 1950's they became mass-produced when they could be manufactured from brightly coloured plastic.

Today hula hoops are an inclusive and accessible piece of sports equipment that can be used by people of all ages and abilities.

Hula hoops can be used in PE lessons as they are a fun and effective way to burn calories and body fat, improve balance and coordination, strengthen core muscle groups and boost overall cardiovascular fitness.

Hula hooping is inexpensive and does not require specialised spaces, and can be taught indoors or outdoors.

Hoops can be purchased in different sizes and are a versatile addition to your storeroom.

Follow these simple steps to get started:

  • Ensure feet are positioned correctly. Both feet should be shoulder-width apart, with one foot slightly in front of the other.
  • The back should be straight and core muscles engaged. Do not bend at the waist as this puts strain on the lower back.
  • Position the hoop around the waist with the hoop resting in the small of the back. Place hands on either side of the hoop.
  • Start spinning the hoop in a counter-clockwise direction. Left-handed users might find it easier to spin the hoop in a clockwise direction.
  • As the hoop starts to spin, rotate the waist in a circular motion to keep the hoop moving.
  • Push hips slightly forward as the hoop moves across the stomach, and push back when the hoop moves across the back.

It will take practice to perfect the movement and rhythm. If the hoop falls, pick it up and try again!

The longest world record for continuous hula hoop spinning is 74 hours and 54 minutes!
